It is important to understand the differences in your rights and responsibilities as you leave high school and enter college. Here are some important points to keep in mind:
- Visit Disability Resources and Services (DRS) for an information session during your junior or senior year of high school.
- Understand your disability and how it impacts your educational experience.
- Know your rights and responsibilities as a student entering college.
Differences between High School and College
|School is responsible for identifying/ diagnosing the students.||You are responsible for identifying yourself.|
|All students must be provided with appropriate education in the least restrictive environment. May qualify for reduced course load.||Qualified students are eligible for appropriate accommodations but not reductions in course requirements.|
|Parents’ comments are required.||You are responsible for self-advocacy. Parental involvement is limited.|
